Storm, IMG, Next, Premier and Elite Model Management sign Cancer Research UK’s No Sunbed policy

Kudos to London’s top agencies Storm, IMG, Next, Premier Model Management and Elite Model Management London, among others, have agreed to a zero tolerance policy on sunbed use for all models on their books, or those wishing to join.

Personally I have been faking it for years. Why would any agency subject their models skin to sunbeds when carefully applied fake tans (my favourite has to be Sienna x -smells amazing like a splash of tropicalness ;-) and applies incredibly evenly if you haven’t tried it stock up now for spring!!!)

The move supports Cancer Research UK’s R UV UGLY? campaign, which highlights the damaging effects sunbed use has on the appearance and health of skin. ‘Supporting this campaign makes perfect sense as the wellbeing of our models is of paramount importance and we take a serious approach to their health.

We do not advocate the use of sunbeds for any of our models, and recommend that they choose safer options if they require a tan – spray tans are easy to apply and can last a week,’ comments Sarah Doukas, Managing Director of Storm Model Management. sk:n clinics are also supporting the initiative by offering the public two free skin assessments (usually £25 each) from now until the end of February.

Fantastic to see people at the top of the fashion industry taking responsibility. I would love to see this effort and solidarity can be matched in other areas of the fashion industry- body image, workforce manufacturing, use of fur to name just a few.

Just a few sunbed myths from- http://www.sunsmart.org.uk/advice-and-prevention/sunbeds/

Sunbed myths

People use sunbeds for all sorts of reasons. Here, we clear up a few of the most common myths.

Being tanned is not a sign of health

The simple fact that your skin has changed colour is a sign of damage. Without goggles, UV from sunbeds can also damage your eyes and lead to irritation, conjunctivitis and eye cancer.

Skin damage from sunbeds is just as big a problem for young people

You can’t always see the damage that UV does straight away as it builds up gradually. But every time you use a sunbed you are damaging your skin, making it look worse in the long run. Using sunbeds for the first time before the age of 35 increases the risk of developing melanoma skin cancer by 75%. Surgical treatment for skin cancer can result in serious scarring.

Spending more time on sunbeds will not make your tan look any better

We each have our own tanning limits. No matter how much UV you receive there comes a point when your skin won’t get any darker. Using sunbeds will make your skin coarse, leathery and wrinkled. Boosting your tan by having two sunbed sessions within 24 hours or after sunbathing is particularly harmful. Get your beauty sleep in your own bed, rather than on a sunbed.

Sunbed tanning is no safer than sun tanning

Sunbeds are not a ‘safe’ alternative to sun tanning. The main cause of skin cancer is overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Like the sun, sunbeds give off UVA and UVB rays. While sunburn is mostly caused by UVB, both types of UV can cause DNA damage, which can lead to skin cancer.

Modern sunbeds emit mostly UVA rays, but UVB rays can make up anywhere from 0.5-4% of their total output. These emissions can be comparable to the midday sun. And the amount of UVA given off can be 10-15 times higher than the midday sun. .

You cannot tan safely by building your sunbed tan gradually

Unfortunately, using sunscreen or limiting your time on a sunbed will not completely protect your skin from damage and ageing. In fact, short periods of intense, irregular UV exposure, like you get on a sunbed, are the fastest way to damage your skin.

A tan will not provide much protection from the sun on holiday

A tan offers very limited protection from sunlight or burning. At most, a sunbed tan is the equivalent to a sunscreen with SPF of just 2-4. Not enough to keep you safe in the sun. And if you don’t tan easily in the sun, you won’t tan easily on a sunbed.

You don’t need to burn to get a tan

Burning or going red under a sunbed is a sign that you have seriously harmed your skin. UV can penetrate deep into the skin’s layers and damage the DNA in our skin cells. Cells damaged by UV are at greater risk of mutating and then dividing uncontrollably, which is what happens in cancer.

You don’t need a sunbed to produce vitamin D

Vitamin D is essential for good health. Our bodies make the vitamin when our skin is exposed to UV rays and it is also present in certain foods. You only need short exposures to the sun to produce adequate amounts. So you don’t need a sunbed to get your vitamins! For more information see our vitamin D page.

Nipple licking and a flaccid penis! A ground breaking approach to marketing skin care……..…Or soft porn?

Last night I attended ap rivate viewing of REN Skin care’s 18+ Love Clean Skin viral. I was extremely excited to be invited, I adore Ren’s line clean yet potent and high tech skin care!

There are some great products working their way to the shelves and I will let you know how I get on with their Bio Retinoid Anti-Ageing Concentrate, Clarifying Toning Lotion and Revitalising Sun Veil!

As I sat amongst beauty writers and editors at the viewing I felt the emotion of the room. Starting at anticipation and quickly transforming into shock and awkwardness as everything was revealed and I make no qualms when I say everything!

The provocative film gives a fly on the wall glimpse at the passion of 2 young lovers who are artfully captured undressing and making love in a fjord in Sweden.

You are loosely reminded that skin is the forefront of this message as the couple cling on to each others flesh.

After the brief river romp the couple sit naked on a rock, “how do you feel?” he asks her “Clean” she smiles. Clean translates as REN in Swedish; a nice touch of brand reinforcement.

The honesty and boldness of the film is metaphorical of the ethos’s of the brand ut is this beautifully artful and genuinely evocative or a cheap way of using sex and sensationalism for self promotion?

The creative director Danny Brooke Taylor expressed “It’s about saying I’m happy with my skin, and I’m going to care for it, show it off. Touch someone’s skin that I love and celebrate it.”

My initial reaction was an extremely British, prudish blush. Speaking to others who have watched the video I have heard it described as beautiful, offensive and even soft porn.

As the fuchsia tones gradually drained from my cheeks I was left pretty speechless but actually surprisingly impressed.

Shock factor is obviously the route REN followed whilst creating this viral. I wanted personally to see a stronger link to skin care (even though you do see more skin than you’d expect…)

It wasn’t  selling the brand to me, I liked the thought process behind the film but I did find this video refreshing to the usual images of impossibly perfect, slightly overexposed and painfully airbrushed smouldering teenager or the cheesy, jazz hands in the air bounce and smile of a “real woman” (who are more often than not stunning, perfectly proportioned, cellulite free plus sized models) as alternatives.

What do you think of REN’s viral video?Let me know your thoughts.

New work- Natural make up using My Mix Foundation

I wanted to share a little natural make up with you. I recently worked on some shots of Barbora a gorgeous new face at Premier model management.  I love creating natural looks- perfecting brows, creating flawless skin with a glow and giving the cheeks a flash of glowing color.

I prepped the skin with Liz Earle’s Cleanse and Polish Hot polish cleanser, skin repair moisturizer.

For a totally flawless skin I used Myface’s My Mix foundation, this is a great foundation for close up skin in photo shoots as it is light weight the finish is exceptionally natural (although the coverage i s too light for problem skin, you will need to team with the matching concealer).

I groomed barbora’s eye brows using Shavata brow products.

For the lips and cheeks I patted on a little Becca Beach Tint Lip and Cheek stain and finished the lips with a little lip balm.

I finished by carefully applying a coat of Bobbi Brown’s No Smudge Mascara.

I also smouldered the look up later with heavy eye liner and some rocky body art.

New work

Here’s a recent shoot I did with Simon Hadler and Annelie from Storm models.

The products used were Chanel Pro Lumiere foundation, Derma colour concealer, Guerlain Terracotta Bronzer, a mix of Bobbi Brown lipsticks and MAC Grape pigment on the eyes (which I thought photographed really nicely with a good shine).

I finished the eyes with MAC smoulder eyeliner and Dior show mascara.

Hope you like.

Angelina Jolie’s Golden Globes gorgeous red lips and my top, statement reds

The 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards were held on Sunday.

The stars were dressed to impress on the red carpet but I can never see past the make up and here’s why-

Mamma mia, those lips. She looks smoking hot. A great shade on her works well with her Atelier Versace dress! Also rocking a 10 out of 10 on the red carpet with amazing red lips to top off an amazing red was Dianna Agron!  Too “matchy” for some with her amazing red Giles Deacon dress but I think it works.

A fail for me was Claire Danes. I don’t know why, I love red lips taking focus against monochrome, I love red lips on blondes but this could have been edgier in a deeper matte red. The hair looks really prissy I think a really sleek pony tail would of looked better…

Some amazing statement lippies for any one who wants to try and create their own red carpet red lip are-

Tom Ford Wild Ginger an extremely highly pigmented,  rich orange-red £36 from Harrods

Mac Ruby Woo £13.50 long wearing, deep bold, matte red.

Laura Mercier Satin Lip Colour Sangria semi matte wine red

New work – SLINK MAGAZINE Cover and spread

Very happy to have been asked to do the make up for Slink Magazine’s latest cover and fashion spread.

The magazine is looking more amazing with every issue! CHECK IT OUT HERE!

Just in time for the party season I prepped our 3 model’s winter skin with Dermalogica skin care. The make up (all products MAC and MAC Pro) was all about disco ball eyes and complementary lips!

I created large emerald glitter flicks of Bara our blonde bombshell from Milk Management.

Smoky saphire sparkle was used to compliment the sultry brown eyes of  Louise O’Reilly   @Excell/Models1.

…And last but by no means least! To glitz up the grown up, elegant styles Slink’s rather talented editor Rivkie Baum created on Laura G at Hughes Models I created an embelished smoky look with black and emerald glitter.

We had a amazing team- Dave Wise was the photographer, Oscar Alexander Lundberg created editorial hair styles with a touch of vintage glam and special thanks to Nadia Blanco who assisted me as well as created the sparkly nails.

Also check out Slink magazines new Youtube Channel and the amazing party hair “how tos” we made with hair superstar Lee Stafford!
